Close Up Trip
Beal City High School Students Spend a Week in Washington, Philadelphia and New York City Where Politics and Culture Merge
by Cindi Gigowski
Ali Sheldon, Amanda Schafer, Brittany Marchiando, Nicole Massey, Jackie Ovaitt, Sarah Coston, and Kelli Zeien, accompanied by Ms. Gigowski visited three of America's most influential cities in one week! Their Close Up program fused the political perspective of Washington with the historical beginnings of Philadelphia and the cultural diversity of New York. In Washington, students spent three days developing knowledge of the basic concepts of government and citizenship, touring the Capital and meeting with Michigan representatives. After Washington, they headed to Philadelphia, where several extensive onsite study visits and primary documents lead students to Independence Park and the new Constitution Center. Students spent the final days experiencing the culture of New York City while exploring Manhattan's unique offerings. They visited the United Nations, Wall Street, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, and attended the Broadway theater production Phantom of the Opera.
